Overview

Building-integrated photovoltaic design, where solar tiles replace conventional roofing rather than mounting on top of it. The most demanding format in residential solar: hundreds of 72 W tiles instead of dozens of panels, multi-plane and multi-azimuth geometry, Tesla MCI mid-circuit interrupters for rapid shutdown, and Powerwall 3 integrated inverters — engineered as one system.

The problem

A Solar Roof is not a panel array with a different finish. Hundreds of individual 72 W tiles cross every plane of a complex roof, there is no racking to flash and no array to walk around, and rapid shutdown has to be solved with mid-circuit interrupters rather than module-level electronics. Get the stringing or the MCI placement wrong and the roof comes apart to fix it.

What we did

  1. Lay out tiles and design strings across every roof plane and azimuth, grouped to the Powerwall that will carry them.
  2. Place Tesla MCI mid-circuit interrupters to the PVRSS requirement and NEC 690.12.
  3. Integrate Powerwall 3 and Gateway 3 electrically — whole-home or partial backup, with the utility interconnection drawn.
  4. Detail the tile attachment and Cobalt underlayment against the actual rafter span, so the roofer and the electrician read the same set.
